Something that particularly bothers me about AI is that it seems to break the reciprocity of online spaces — the digital commons — especially with software and games, where the idea is that you can take and modify something and give it back to the original developers. Many language models are trained on popular code, so anyone can take from that knowledge base and incorporate it into proprietary applications without giving back. The same dynamic seems to be happening in many places — a writer keeps a blog that becomes meaningful for a model's training, but the author is not visible in the data. So, I am wondering — especially in the context of working software, but more broadly — is there a way to repair this broken reciprocity?
