As I previously mentioned, in 2024, we convened what is called an alignment assembly to respond to the harms in generative AI caused by the scammer and fraudulent ads online. As people know, the deepfakes in 2024 were very prevalent in all democracies, but as Asia’s most free — internet freedom — country, Taiwan simply cannot do top-down censorship. Therefore, we sent SMS text messages to 200,000 random numbers around Taiwan, asking what we should do together. People chimed in with their ideas, and we chose 447 people in a mini-public, statistically the same as the wider polity, in tables of 10. They deliberated. The only simple rule is that AI only facilitates, and they have to convince the nine other people at the same table before their idea bubbles up.
